Arts Alliance of Woodbury’s - Arts Walk

When:

The Arts Alliance of Woodbury will kick off its third season of Arts Walks from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 20, on Main Street South.

Area residents are invited to come out for an afternoon stroll in the center of town, where pop-up events and exhibits are planned along both sides of the road from the Woodbury Library in the north to Studio Hill Gallery in the south.

A series of performances will take place on the patio outside St. Paul’s Church. From 2:15 to 3 p.m., Woodbury Poet Laureate Sandy Carlson will read excerpts from her books, “Mother Tongue” and “Slow Passage Home,” plus some new works. The Rev. Tuesday Rupp, rector of St. Paul’s and a trained vocalist, will entertain from 3:15 to 4 p.m., and singer-songwriter Doug Mahard will perform from 4:15 to 5 p.m.

Visual artists will exhibit their works along the cemetery wall adjacent to St. Paul’s.

The Gallery at the Woodbury Public Library will be open that day, featuring an exhibition of more than 150 works by pioneering Modernist artist Natalie Van Vleck, founder of Flanders Nature Center.

Studio Hill Gallery, 507 Main St. South, will be open for visitors to view “We Are Here Now, Hidden In Plain Sight 1978-2023,” a multi-media show featuring iconic East Village NYC artists and photographers.

The gallery’s shaded patio courtyard will be the venue for Arts Walk’s popular Spoken Word segment. Among the five to seven performers expected to appear are Sandy Carlson, writer Cynthia Eastman and poet MayaRose Spoken Word.

The old schoolhouse on Main Street South will be open to the public for the duration of the Arts Walk.  Carol Sideli, a member of the Old Woodbury Historical Society, will be present to answer questions regarding this one-room schoolhouse.

The Glebe House Museum will also be open to visitors. A storyteller from the Institute for American Indian Studies will be on hand and plein air artists have been invited to set up their easels in the museum’s Gertrude Jekyll Garden, which is expected to be in full spring bloom.

There is no cost for guests or exhibitors at the AAW Arts Walk. Visitors may begin their walk at either end of the extended venue. Ample parking can be found at the town offices, at the Senior Community Center and along various side streets.

The all-volunteer, nonprofit Arts Alliance of Woodbury is committed to supporting and promoting the arts in Woodbury and surrounding towns. New members are welcome.
