Mel Snyder Memorial Kid's Fishing Derby
When:The Woodbury Volunteer Fire Department’s 21st annual fishing derby for children aged 13 and under is Saturday May 13th 2023 from 8am to 12 noon. The Mel Snyder Memorial Event, named in honor of a deceased fire chief, is at Kings Pond, Rail Tree Hill Road off Route 317. “We’re stocking enough fish so that everyone should catch at least one,“ says organizer Jason Hatstat, a Woodbury firefighter. “Think lots of kids, lots of fish, lots of fun.”
Hatstat says the pond will be stocked for the free occasion with four trout species – brook, brown, rainbow and, as a special treat, golden trout. The fire department raffle prizes for the children will include fishing gear and camping equipment donated by local businesses. Hatstat pledged to publicize donor names at the event.
In addition to the top prize for the largest catch, awards are made for good sportmanship in honor of the late Darlene Start, a longtime supporter of the volunteer fire department, and for the most motivated child.
