AAW Arts Walk

 

WOODBURY – The Arts Alliance of Woodbury will host its last Arts Walks of the season from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, August 19, on Main Street South. Area residents are invited to come out for an afternoon stroll in the center of town, where pop-up events, exhibits, and live performances are planned along both sides of the road from the Woodbury Public Library in the north to Studio Hill Gallery in the south and selected other historic sites in Woodbury.

A series of performances will take place on the patio outside St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. The Valley Chordsmen, a wonderful group of crooners in the barber-shop tradition, will perform from 2:15pm-2:45pm.

Sweetcake Mountain, a funky bluegrass band consisting of a mandolin, (performed by Woodburian Alan Zinser), banjo, guitar, and double bass, will be from 4:15pm-5:00pm. A fun time for all.

Visual artists will exhibit their works along the cemetery wall adjacent to St. Paul’s. See the works of painters Cynthia Gillette, Janet Kasle, Nadine Newell, Liz Lanspery. Painter and potter Mike LaChioma will be displaying his art. Barbara Hunt and friends from The Woodbury United Methodist Church will be offering children's literature-based, recycled paper-folding activities and handbell / hand chime performances with audience participation. Sandy Carlson, Woodbury’s poet laureate, will have hand-woven woolen blankets from the Hutsul region of Ukraine along with her books of poetry.

Internationally acclaimed mask performer and puppeteer Adelka Polak will perform an interactive puppet walkabout along the cemetery wall in front of St. Paul’s church from 2:00-3:00pm.

The Gallery at the Woodbury Public Library will be open that day, with featured artist show: “Re-Claimed: the recycled art of Artivist Sarah Jane Thornington and Collagist Marla Thornington Martin”.Artivist Sarah Jane Thornington and Collagist Marla Thornington Martin bring ‘Re-Claimed’ an exhibit of recycled art to the Woodbury Public Library’s Gallery Space in August.  The sisters have created together from a young age and their art reflects their life paths and passions. Sarah Thornington creates art from items found during beach cleanups and includes bits of plastic washed up by the sea.  Marla Thornington Martin creates art from old book pages and images that catch her eye.  The artists will be at the Woodbury Public Library during the Arts Alliance of Woodbury’s Arts Walk on Saturday, August 19, 2:00 – 4:30 PM to talk about their work.  All ages are invited to stop in and create art with them with provided materials.  Sarah Thornington will also give a talk “Can Art Save the Planet?” on August 17 at 6:30 PM.

Studio Hill Gallery, 507 Main St. South, will be open for visitors to view the Summer Group art show featuring works by six local artists. A collection of “outsider art”, photography, industrial art, and plein-air paintings.

The gallery’s shaded patio courtyard will be the venue for the Arts Walk’s popular Spoken Word segment which will begin at 3:30pm. Among the five to seven performers expected to appear are Sandy Carlson (Woodbury’s Poet Laureate), writer Cynthia Eastman and poets Tom Nicotera, Sherryl Bedingfield, and Rap to God. There will be an Open Mic opportunity for anyone who feels inspired to share once the scheduled participants have finished.

Docent Carol Sideli, a member of the Old Woodbury Historical Society, will be present in the Old Historic Schoolhouse, from 2:00-5:00pm, to answer any and all questions. Carol is quite passionate about telling all, especially school-age children, what school was like one hundred plus years ago.

Glebe House Museum and Gertrude Jekyll Garden will be open at no charge with a docent available.  Tours of the garden will be offered by the gardeners caring for this unique historical garden.  In addition, a masterful storyteller from the Institute for American Indian Studies will be present from 2:00-5:00pm on the grounds.

Polar Sweets Ice Cream Truck will be available during the Arts Walk, located by the Library.

There is no cost for guests or exhibitors at the AAW Arts Walk. 

Visitors may begin their walk at either end of the extended venue. 

Ample parking can be found at the town offices, at the Senior Community Center, 281 Main St. South, and along various side streets.

Rain date for the event, is the following day, Sunday 8/20 – at the same times and

locations and will be posted by noon on the day on their Facebook Page – which is

also visible on their Home web page.

 

The all-volunteer, nonprofit Arts Alliance of Woodbury is committed to supporting and promoting the arts in Woodbury and surrounding towns. New members are welcome.
