Pomperaug Valley Garden Club
The mission of the Pomperaug Valley Garden Club is to promote interest in gardens, horticulture, floral and landscape design as well as the protection of wildflowers, trees and birds, and to encourage public plantings, beautification and conservation. The club offers programs on horticulture and flower arranging as well as environmental and conservation issues. Meetings are held the second Tuesday of the month in various locations; details are available on the club's website at www.pomperaugvalleygc.org. Members of the public are welcome to attend for a nominal fee.
Membership is open to anyone interested in the club's purpose and who is at least a part-time resident of the Pomperaug Valley area.
Each year, club members provide and maintain plantings at Washington Park, the North Green, the Cannon Green, town buildings, the Post Office and the entrance to Orenaug Park. Members also maintain the Botany Trail at Flanders Nature Center & Land Trust. During the holidays, they decorate the town buildings with traditional handmade wreaths and swags, and make small Christmas arrangements for shut-ins.
The club sponsors a variety of fundraising events throughout the year to help finance its community-oriented projects. As a charter member of the Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut, the club also contributes to, and participates in, various state projects.
