Hollow Park

Several improvement projects at the Hollow Park have the popular recreation area ready for the deluge of families that accompany each stretch of pleasant weather.

New playscapes, the long-awaited river walk and a new ball field are among a few of the improvements designed to accommodate the recreational needs for town's ever-increasing population.

After a few years in the planning stages, the river walk became a reality when the Public Works Department cut through dense underbrush and trees to carve a trail approximately one lime in length, circling the entire park.

Truck loads of wood chips were brought in to cover the footpath which is now completed thanks to Public Works crews who labored to improve drainage through a section of muddy terrain.

The river walk begins in the southwest corner of the park, heading east along the banks of the Pomperaug River. This quarter-mile stretch runs through a beautiful wooded area dotted with clearings perfect for picnic breaks.

Perhaps the most scenic spot on the trail is a giant sycamore tree with branches that extend well over the rive bank.

The river walk open the Hollow to the Pomperaug River, this expanding the park's recreational potential. The Parks and Recreation pictures fishing derbies on the river banks and possibly running along stretches of the water if the path is continued to the Nonnewaug River as envisioned in the river walk master plan.

Other improvements include the installation of new playscapes funded in part by a donation from the Woodbury Junior Women's Club. The playscape offers youngsters a maze of tubes, slides and swings guaranteed to give parents a headache when convincing the children it's time to go home.

Also, a center ball field was taken out to make room for 60 foot by 90 foot ball fields. By removing the center field, more efficient uses can be made of the land, allowing for a net increase of one ball field.

The upper field was also put into use to accommodate the growing number of youth soccer programs.

Former First Selectman Richard Crane said he is impressed with the progress at the Hollow.

"It's a beautiful park and we need to maintain it" said Mr. Crane. "it's used heavily now", he continued, "but the river walk is going to open it up to people who haven't used it in the past"
