Town of Woodbury Education

Woodbury shares its school system with neighboring Bethlehem to make up Region 14. Woodbury schools include Mitchell Elementary School, Woodbury Middle School and Nonnewaug High School. Some Woodbury elementary school aged students are enrolled at Bethlehem Elementary.

School Groups
Mitchell School PTO
A membership drive is held in September and October for parents and teachers at Mitchell Elementary School. The group promotes efforts between the school, home and community to further the physical, mental, cultural and social development of each child

Special events include a Talent Show, a Fun Fair, Walk-a-Thon, candy sale and events to raise funds for cultural arts program, donations of equipment and library items and for playground projects.

Woodbury Middle School PTO
This organization is open to parents of Middle School parents, teachers, aides or staff members.

Funds are raised to bring cultural arts programs to the students and the group encourages parents to take the initiative to be involved in their children's education.

PTO programs include a monthly newsletter an awards program at report card time and granting the Barbara Potter and the Excellent Citizenship awards at the eighth grade graduation.

Monthly meetings with a guest speaker are held at the school. An open house is held in October, as well as a bake sale in December and a bulb sale,

Woodbury FFA
The FFA is the student organization at the Ellis Clark Vocational Agriculture Center at Nonnewaug High School. Student members receive instruction in leadership and communication skills, The FFA is organized at the local or chapter level, and at the state and national level.

Any student currently enrolled in the vocational agriculture program may join. Meetings are held once a month during the school day in the high school auditorium. The chapter sponsors judging contests, an open house, plant sales, leadership conferences, participates in the state and national conventions and holds a banquet.

Nonnewaug High School PTSO
This is a parent-teacher-student organization which supports activities at the high school. Everyone interested in supporting the school is invited to join. Meetings are held monthly at the school in the evening. The annual fund raiser is a Dream Auction

Nonnewaug Sports Booster Club
The Booster Club supports Nonnewaug High School athletic teams and programs by raising funds to assist where budgetary funds are unavailable. It also aims to increase school spirit among the students and their parents.

The club is open to anyone interested in supporting Nonnewaug sports programs and teams. Meetings are held the second Wednesday of the month at the high school

Annual events are three award banquets at the end of each sports season, a Homecoming Dance and a J.V. Basketball Tournament.

Woodbury Scholarship Fund
The fund provides post-secondary school scholarships to Woodbury residents who may be attending a college, university or trade school. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic record, motivation and financial need. The Woodbury recipient may have attended a secondary school outside of Woodbury. Funds are obtained through contribution or by fund raising.

Letters requesting fund donations are mailed to all Woodbury residents each spring. Scholarships are awarded at graduation.

This school offers 2,3,4 or 5 day programs from[6:30 AM to 6 PM for preschoolers, and a kindergarten program for 2,3 or 5 days. either before or after kindergarten sessions. Afterschool day care is also available until 6 PM. Creative Arts is open to children ages three months and up. The program will focus on the arts including music, art, drama and creative play.

Early Learning Center of Woodbury on Bear Hill Road, was founded in 1972 by Kathleen G. Cosgriff. Located on two spacious acres, the school is housed in a former barn which has been transformed into a warm, creative, open environment for children.

Accreditation: ELC is accredited by the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs

Staff: The Director, Kathleen G. Cosgriff, has a MS Degree in Education, and is certified by the Connecticut State Department of Education to teach public school from pre-K through high school. Her experiences include three years teaching in New Milford Public Schools as well as several years teaching in remedial areas in local school systems. Since she founded ELC, Mrs. Cosgriff has been its Director as well as a teacher in every session. Teachers all have college degrees, certification and teaching experience. Each teacher has served an internship at ELC, and our staff attends professional meetings and workshops throughout the year.

Admission: The Early Learning Center of Woodbury has an open admission policy and accepts children ages three to five years. Admission is determined on a first come basis with consideration gives to former ELC families and with an effort to maintain a balance of boys and girls. Applications from currently enrolled children are accepted during January for the following year. Admission to the general public begins February 1. A non-refundable application fee must accompany each application.

Curriculum: Our curriculum is based on the principle of helping a child prepare for the future by satisfying his current needs and providing enriching experiences. Music, Art, Language Experiences, Pre-Reading Skills, Math Concepts, Science, Gross and Fine Motor Activities, Sand and Water play, Animal Care, Cooking, and Nature are part of our expanding curriculum. We are well equipped with video recorders, slide and overhead projectors, a computer, record, tape, CD and DVD players, and current software.

Philosophy and Goals: ELC is committed to the encouragement of continuous growth and development of each child, according to his or her individual needs and potential. teachers encourage each youngster to develop independence, creativity, self-confidence, a strong, positive self-image and promote each child's enthusiasm for learning. Children are gently guided to work and play independently, within small groups as well as within the entire class.

Programs: Two, three and five half-day programs are available. Tuesday and Thursday mornings are limited to three year olds. Tuesday and Thursday afternoons are open to three and four year olds. Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings are limited to four and five year olds. Three or five day afternoon programs are available for the older children. The morning sessions are from 9 to 11:30; the afternoon sessions from 12:30 to 3:00
